National Apprenticeship Week: Ellie Phelps’ Journey at TW

Ellie Phelps, National Apprenticeship Week at Thorne Widgery

My name is Ellie, and I’m currently working towards my ACA qualification through an accountancy apprenticeship at TW. Finance and business have always fascinated me, so choosing an apprenticeship in accountancy felt like the perfect way to gain real-world experience while earning a recognised qualification.

A Day in My Role

One of the best things about my ACA apprenticeship is that no two days are the same! My responsibilities include:

✔️ Processing and reviewing accounts
✔️ Answering client queries
✔️ Providing business advisory support

Each day presents new challenges and learning opportunities, making my finance apprenticeship both exciting and rewarding.

What I’ve Learned So Far

Through my apprenticeship, I’ve gained valuable hands-on experience in accounting and finance. Since the industry is always evolving, there’s always something new to learn. Alongside technical expertise, I’ve developed problem-solving, communication, and client management skills—all essential for a successful career in accountancy.

My Favourite Part of the Apprenticeship

A highlight of my ACA apprenticeship has been joining the Business Advisory Group. Being involved in projects that impact businesses has given me great insight into financial strategy and consultancy.

How TW Supports My Development

TW has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey. From study support to exam preparation, they ensure apprentices have the resources and guidance needed to succeed. Having a team that truly advocates for us makes all the difference.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship in accountancy, I highly recommend it—it’s an excellent way to gain qualifications while developing real-world skills.
