Companies House Identity Verification – Your Questions Answered

Companies House Identity Verification - Your Questions Answered

From 8 April 2025, Companies House introduced a voluntary identity verification service.

But this won’t stay voluntary for long. By autumn 2025, new directors and people with significant control will have to verify their identity, with a wider rollout planned in 2026.

Here’s what you need to know 👇

What is identity verification at Companies House?

It’s a new system to check that anyone filing information for a business really is who they say they are.

  • It applies to anyone who registers, owns, controls, or runs a UK company.
  • The aim is to crack down on fraud and stop fake filings.
  • For genuine businesses, it’s just a bit of extra admin – but it makes the system far safer.

Who needs to verify, and when?

  • Now (voluntary stage): Anyone can choose to verify their identity.
  • From autumn 2025: All new directors and people with significant control must verify when a company is registered.
  • Existing directors/PSCs: You’ll need to verify within 12 months of your next confirmation statement.

How do I verify my identity?

You have two options:

  1. Direct with Companies House – Use your GOV.UK One Login and provide a biometric passport, UK driving licence, or residence permit.
  2. Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – usually an accountant or solicitor who is authorised to carry out checks.

What documents are accepted?

  • Biometric passport (any country)
  • UK full or provisional photo driving licence
  • UK Biometric Residence Permit/Card
  • UK Frontier Worker Permit
You may also be asked for your current address and the year you moved in.

What if I use an ACSP?

They must follow strict Companies House rules, including:

  • Collecting your full name, date of birth, and address
  • Checking original documents
  • Keeping records for 7 years

How long does verification last?

It’s permanent – unless something changes.

  • Change your name or address? You’ll need to re-verify.
  • Leave the company? A new director/PSC will need to verify instead.

What happens if I don’t verify?

  • You won’t be able to file documents.
  • Your business could be put at risk.
  • If you’re struggling, get professional advice straight away.

Is there a fee?

  • Direct with Companies House: Free
  • Through an ACSP: They may charge for the service.

Why does this matter?

  • Cuts down on fraud and fake company names
  • Protects your business from illegitimate filings
  • Helps keep Companies House records accurate and trustworthy
