Apprentices

Investing for the Future

16At Thorne Widgery we’re proud of our 70 year history and being the largest independent accountancy practice in Hereford. We believe good business is built on good planning. So when we’re looking to the future we know its key to recruit apprentices with great technical skills, to ensure we have strong resources to grow our business in the years ahead.

Apprentices working with us benefit from exposure to a varied customer base, from businesses of all sizes through to schools and non-profit organisations. They have the opportunity to experience a wide range of accountancy processes whilst developing their skills and knowledge. It is our experience that many apprentices have performed a number of different accountancy roles by the time they have completed their training programme.

Our apprenticeship programme is fully supported by HGTA, which as an employer, gives us a joined-up approach to trainee’s progression at college whilst gaining MAAT and ACCA accreditation.

Looking further to the future, many of our former apprentices are still enjoying a rewarding career at Thorne Widgery, many after more years than they’d care to remember!

Most importantly, here’s what our current apprentices say:

Charlotte Toon

Charlotte joined TW in 2015 after 5yrs at Santander. She loves working with numbers but found long-term, banking wasn’t offering the career opportunities she was looking for particularly in auditing. Having passed Level 3 AAT she’s looking to continue her studies to become fully ACCA qualified & to pass on her knowledge & experience to other new apprentices.

So why TW Charlotte?

“Wealth of knowledge which is good when I’m still learning as lots of people to ask. As TW offer a wide range of accounting services (which you can’t get in all practices) there’s plenty to learn & the opportunity to find what parts of accountancy I enjoy. As the largest practice in Hereford with a good reputation, I’m proud to say I work at TW.”

Steffen Cunningham

Steffen joined us in the summer of 2015. Following Hereford Sixth Form College he was a chef at Wagamama’s whilst he looked for a career that would allow him to develop his love of maths. At TW Steffen relishes the variety of work & being involved in the full accounting process from the collection of raw information through to the publishing of accounts by Xero.

So why TW Steffen?

“Since joining no two jobs are ever the same, making the work variable & exciting. TW has a fantastic team of enthusiastic accountants who’re always willing to go out of their way to help each other & benefit a business the best they can.”

Laura McCarthy

Laura started a degree at Nottingham Uni but having enjoyed maths at A level, decided an apprenticeship would be a better route to achieve her goal of becoming an accountant. Although joining with no previous accountancy knowledge she’s enjoyed all the challenges of being on a steep learning curve and has the great aim of working through her qualifications inspiring other new apprentices on the way.

So why TW Laura?

“TW has a thriving working environment & a positive attitude towards teaching & learning. This makes it the perfect learning environment for a training accountant like me. TW also offers many opportunities to work in other areas of accountancy such as audit, which is beneficial for enhancing my accountancy knowledge.”

Harvey Lewis

Harvey is one of our youngest apprentices to date having joined us straight out of school at the age of 16. He is currently working towards his AAT Level 2 while assisting our team with the day-to-day work of the practice. He hopes to continue his studies with the goal of one day becoming a qualified accountant.

So why TW Harvey?

I can confidently say I feel comfortable where I am, everyone has welcomed me and have been looking after me; helping me into the accountancy world. Thorne Widgery has taught me a lot with their training sessions, teaching me the base knowledge needed and also little tips that will make jobs easier to understand.”
